Village Marathons

Mon Jul 03 2006

The website of the Lebanese organisers of the Marathon races mentioned in April 2006 the possibility of a 8Km race at Meziara in July.zgharta.com made contact with the organisers concerning this race and we have today received their reply saying,

"We have completed our wind down from the Tyre International Half Marathon and are now in full preparation for the Beirut Marathon in November. Strategically we have decided that we will not be holding small races in the villages under the banner of the Beirut Marathon Association as each race costs upwards of $100.000 to prepare and execute and this is frequently a figure that exceeds the capability of the smaller areas. We are however working out a scheme whereby we provide logistical support to organizations from the villages who would like to make a race. This means that should there be the interest from the village we will be ready to step in and help out with offering direction and advice on the best way to make a race successful. Thank you again for your email and we do look forward to discussing this further"

Let us know if anyone would like to explore the possibilty of holding a marathon race in their town or village next year.

Salam Zgharta plays to save sixth place next week

Sun May 07 2006

Salam Zgharta play their last game of the 2005/2006 season of the First Division of the Lebanese League, on Sunday, 14th May 2006, against Tadamon Sour, at the Tripoli "home" ground.

There are only two points separating the teams, with Salam in sixth place with seventeen points and Tadamon in seventh place with fifteen points. When the teams played each other earlier this season in December, Salam lost 1-0.

Whether Salam keeps its sixth place depends on the Tadamom game and also the results of Tripoli Sports Club and Al Raiyan games who are in eight and ninth place with fourteen points each.

Three points are awarded to the winning team and one point to each team is awarded for a draw. Where teams have equal points, "goal difference" ( eg if team A has scored four goals and team B one, the goal difference is three ) will determine their place , Where teams have equal goal difference, the team who has scored more goals will be placed higher. There is also the "away-goal rule" where the team who score more goals in away games are awarded the higher position.

On goal difference, against Salam's minus 14, Al Raiyan has a goal difference of minus 19 with Tripoli Sports Club a goal difference of minus 9 . Next Sunday, Al Raiyan play Al Safa (3rd place) and Tripoli Sports Club play Al Ahed (5th place).

NEWS UPDATE The Lebanese Football League has announced that Salam's game against Tadamon Sour will be played on Friday, 12th May 2006 at Tripoli.

Salam Zgharta: A key weekend in its 35 years history. FINAL SCORE

Wed Mar 15 2006

Supporters of Salam Zgharta are hoping that when the team play in the Quarterfinals of the Lebanese Cup this weekend they will be able to forget their recent troubles on and off the field.

In their 35th Anniversary year, Salam, will play away in the Quarterfinals against Al Mabarrah on Sunday, 19th March 2006. In the home game both teams drew 0-0. When they last played against each other in First Division this season, Al Mabarrah won only by one goal, scored in the twenty-first minute. Such scores show that Salam is able to hold its own against them.

It would be a fantastic fillip to Salam if they got through to the semi-finals, as we hear team morale is low. Issues such as yearly changes in the team, preventing long term cohesion and commitment; absence of investment both in players and resources and salary issues are the areas spoken of.

It is said that some in the Club are relying on the fact that only one team will be relegated this season from the First Division and that Salam will be able to avoid the bottom slot. Before last weekend there were three teams beneath Salam. Now there are only two beneath them, with only four points separating Salam from the bottom team.

There are five more First Division matches to the end of the season in May. When Salam played the teams before they won one game, lost two and drew two.

Some supporters are questioning whether the Club will soon replace its Zgharta name and in the long term its Zghartawien connection. Prior to 1971 the Club was called Salam Ashrafieh, before it was taken over by a consortium of Zghartawiens, headed by Sassine Ghazaleh, and renamed. In the intervening thirty-five years Salam Zgharta has become part of our lives, indeed many who read this will have been players or the sons and daughters of players. We at zgharta.com feel that part of a town is its local football club, so we hope that Salam Zgharta will remain so called and that Zgharta Zawie will be its main recruiting ground and fan base.

NEWS UPDATE The game was decided on penalties, with Salam Zgharta losing 5-4. At the end of normal play the score line was 0-0, the same result as the first game between the teams.
