The official voting figures for the town of Zgharta in the May municipal elections show that of the 19,551 registered voters only 8,591 voted, with 324 void votes.

This represents a turn out of 43.94%

The Qaimaqam of Zgharta, Mr Abul Fattah Othman, together with Mr Yousef Frangieh declared the official results for the election of the office of President and Vice President for certain Municipal Councils.

The Zgharta Municipal Council held a meeting on Friday to elect the positions of President and Vice President of the Council.

The following were so elected:

Joseph Mehsen Maarawi, President
Georges Samaan Akleh, Vice President

To see the members of the newly elected Zgharta Municipal Council and Moukhtars see the main site - Civic Info - Municipality of Zgharta- Ehden members.

The voter turn out was reported to be 44% in Zgharta against an area estimate of 45% to 50%.

The Council will convene , at a date to be announced, to appoint the President and Vice President of the Council.

Indications are that the candidates appearing on the list presented by retired General Joseph Maarawi won all the 21 places on the Zgharta Municipal Council.

The Interior Minister, Elias Murr, announced on Wednesday that motorcycles will not be permitted to be used from 9pm Friday 28 May to 6am Monday 31 May 2004, to coincide with the northern municipal elections. Those who are caught doing so will have their motorcycles seized.

Similar announcements have been made in respect of earlier regional municipal elections.

Following the closure of the Candidates for Municipal Election last night in Zgharta Zawie reports indicate the following position.

Zgharta.

There are two Municipal Council electoral lists.
List 1.
This was declared by retired General Joseph Maarawi at the Pierre Farshack Hall, Municipal Theatre, Zgharta on Wednesday evening. The list comprises of 21 members. Details will be published by zgharta.com.
List 2.
Full details of the list will be published by zgharta.com in the next couple of days. Among the declared candidates are: Pierre Mouawad, Semaan Iskandar, Milad Doueihy and Silman Mackary
