Eid el Gh Tass (Epiphany)

Wed Jan 05 2005

On Thursday sees Eid el Gh Tass, known in the western church as Epiphany. In many eastern churches, including the Maronite Church, the day is traditionally the day when children are baptised.

The day commemorates Jesus’ baptism, with the visit of the Magi linked to Christmas. The western term “Epiphany” means "to show" or "to make known" or even "to reveal." In Western churches, it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King. In some Central and South American countries influenced by Catholic tradition, Three Kings’ Day, or the night before, is the time for opening Christmas presents.

The 6th will also be Christmas Day in the Armenian Orthodox Church, which follow the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar is some thirteen days behind the Gregorian calendar, which is followed by the Roman Catholic and Maronite churches.

Tonight, 5th January, the Parish of Ehden Zgharta, will celebrate midnight mass at Saydet Zgharta, Saint John’s Cathedral and Saint Sarkis & Saint Bakhos Church.

On Thursday, 6th, Mass will be held at 7.30 am at Saint Sarkis and Saint Bakhos Church, Ehden.
