We are reliably informed that the propose building of a tourist centre and eco lodge within the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve has been postponed pending the appointment of a new Reserve's Executive Committee. We further understand that the current President of the Zgharta Ehden Municipal Council, Toufic Mouawad will be appointed the President of the new committee.
We reported last month in our article, Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve over development? that local environmentalists were oppose to the propose development.
Since the mention of the tender on the Zgharta Ehden Council website there has been no update posted. The Reserve's own website, www.horshehden.org not known for being the source of its own news relying in the past on the Council's, is currently under further "construction" and makes no mention of the tender or the possibility of a new committee. |

We hear that local environmentalists are concerned about the planned Eco Lodge and Visitors Centre within the confines of the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve.
We reported last month that Union of Zgharta Zawie Councils announced that it was seeking tenders for the construction of a Ecolodge for the Horsh Ehden Nature Reserve. It is not clear how the Union is involved in a matter which concerns the Reserve which is a separate legal entity established by decree. The announcement said that the propose construction will be funded by the European Union's European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). Details for the tender can be obtained from the Union's office's, contact details being +961 6 66 01 20 Fax: +961 6 66 31 20. Tenders are required to be submitted no later than Thursday, 26th August 2010, noon.
Some point out that there is already a Eco Lodge at the western entrance (Joueit) of the Reserve owned and managed by Alfonse Yammine, for the last four years, and question the advisability and sustainability of another one.
There also appears to be criticism about how the decision was made and some question whether the decision was actually made by the full Executive Committee of the Reserve.

The importance of ecotourism to Lebanon is highlighted in an article by Lebanon's English language newspaper, The Daily Star.

The Association for the Protection of Ehden Highlands and Makmel Mountains has published a 2010 Calendar with the theme of revitalising the railway system in Lebanon. The theme has been chosen to highlight the environmental need for Lebanon to consider alternative means of travel and transportation of goods. Lebanon, especially its urban areas, are suffering from heavy traffic congestion and pollution, with dire consequences on peoples health and the wider environment.
The Calendar is being offered to all who share such concerns about the environment. It can be obtained from the Association's President and board member of the Friends of Horsh Ehden, Pierre Mouawad - 03 61 37 95 |
