USAID supports Zgharta School

Fri Dec 07 2007

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced additional funding for its, Lebanon Education Assistance for Development, (LEAD) programme, which seeks to rehabilitate and support Lebanese public schools. One such school which has already received support is, The First Intermediate School for Girls, in Zgharta.

LEAD was launched in December 2006 as a $7 million initiative to reach 209 public schools across Lebanon. Owing to the success of the initial programme, USAID announced increase funding of $2.6 million. Through LEAD, the United States is funding repairs to school infrastructure; additional school equipment - science and computer laboratories and supplies; programmes on health, nutrition and social awareness; and extracurricular activities to enhance the skills and learning experiences of students.

The press release of USAID in October 2007 says, "The U.S. Government is responding to the specific needs of public schools throughout Lebanon, by providing them with renovation works, computer and science laboratories and extracurricular activities. The First Intermediate School for Girls in Zgharta is one of 263 public schools that are currently receiving USAID assistance under the LEAD (Lebanon Education Assistance for Development) program. Established in Zgharta since 1962, the school accommodates 268 young girls coming from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. The campaign will be between the months of December and February and its preliminary reforestation list includes the following regions: Akkar, Aley, Hasbaya, Baabda, Al shouf, Jezzine, Arqoob, Al Maten.

They quote an ancient proverb, “the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today”.

We are unaware of any local initiatives in the Caza.

Ehden Municipal Building

Fri Nov 23 2007

Since our earlier article quoting the report on Zgharta Ehden Municipal Council's plans to build a second floor for the Municipal Building in Ehden, we have made further enquiries.

It is now our understanding that Mr. Sarkis Yammine of Venezuela has agreed to underwrite the cost of the new floor only up to a particular limit, and not totally as we reported earlier. The Council will pay any extra costs, if the case. The reason for the second floor has yet to be established.

A number of local architects submitted plans to the Council, who subsequently appointed Sylvia Yammine Tayoun to act on its behalf. We have not seen the plans as there was no public exhibition, nor, as far as we can ascertain, was there any pubic consultation process. For those who are not aware of the building's location, it holds an prominent position nearby Sts. Peter & Paul's Church, Al Koubra and Al Midan.

Recent visitors to Ehden say that in the last two weeks work has apparently commenced on the building. We would welcome photographs of the building work if anyone is going to Ehden this weekend.

The main photograph shows the current Municipal Building. Another photograph of the area can be seen on the Full Story page.

Venezuelan Benefactor for Civil & Religious Ehden Projects

Sun Nov 11 2007

It is reported in the El Marada website (9 Oct) that Sarkis Yammine of Venezuela has agreed to underwrite the cost of building a second floor for the Municipality Building in Ehden. He has asked its President, Gen. Joseph Maarrawi to have plans drawn up for this purpose. The architect, Sylvia Yammine Tayoun has been commissioned to draw up the plans. It is not stated what the second floor will be used for.

In Ehden there are two governmental buildings, 1 kilometre apart, the Zgharta Ehden Municipal Council Building and the Serial Building, the later is reserved for the offices of the various Central Government departments. In Zgharta, exceptionally, the Zgharta Ehden Municipal Council has an office within the Zgharta Serail building which contains offices for the Central Government departments.

The Union of Zgharta Zawie Municipal Councils have their own building in Zgharta, having moved in 2006 from the Zgharta Serail to the former premises of the Adcom Bank, Al Tal.

Ehden's Municipal Building was originally built with the aid of another émigré, Sarkis Al-Lebian, of Mexico.

Mr. Yammine is also mentioned in the report as having agreed to pay the restoration cost of Ehden's Saint Simon's Church. The Church is situated in the centre of Ehden, and was built in 1803 in honour of the Saint. In the Church’s sacristy there is a painting of Saint Simon. The photograph is of the Church.
